Encourage someone

How could you encourage someone this week?

Be specific

Think of one person who could use some encouragement today.

Tell them something specific and genuine that you appreciate about them.

‍

Do something practical

Whether it's cooking a meal, helping someone clean or organise their flat, going to an appointment with them or helping them to pick up their prescription or food shop, there are so many practical ways to come alongside others. Perhaps you know someone who is finding things hard right now - you could offer to help in one of these ways, or ask what they would find most helpful.

‍

Look for the overlooked

Make an active effort to notice people, whether it's a homeless person you walk past on the street, someone you see upset or alone at a church service, or your neighbour that you worry might be a bit isolated. Perhaps you could say something encouraging, buy the homeless individual a meal, invite the anxious church attendee to join a smaller group of you going for lunch or see if your neighbour might need help with their shopping, cooking or gardening.

Our Christmas resource, OUTSIDE/IN, focuses on the unlikely characters at the centre of the Christmas story, reminding us that the good news of Jesus is for everyone. Perhaps your church could share copies of OUTSIDE/IN at a community carol service, or theme a church service around the story. Alongside the booklet we also have an animated video, alongside animations with BSL and Makaton.

The True Light is written to speak to us on our grief and exhaustion, in our joy and our gratitude, in our waiting and our daily battles, reminding us that 'the true light' has made itself known among us. The booklet and animations offer us a space to pause amid the busyness of the season, reflecting on the hope and peace found in Christ through every circumstance.

‍

Share a Bible verse

Life Changing Words delivers a verse a day to your inbox or mobile device. Over time, that adds up to real change. Perhaps you could pass on a verse that you've found inspiring, or that would really be of encouragement to the person you are sending it to.

‍

Write a card

Some of us might find communicating out loud a little more difficult - writing a card can be a great way of saying what you want to say when we find it harder in social situations. Even for those who don't, an encouraging card can be something that someone comes back to when they are feeling lonely or discouraged.

‍

Show someone they matter

Encouraging someone can often be about showing them that they matter, or reminding them of God's goodness, love and grace.

You Matter aims to do both of these, telling the story of The Prodigal Son in picture-book form. and reminding readers that they matter, and that everyone is welcomed by God.

Susan, Prison Chaplain

Coming alongside grieving prisoners

"Here in our prison there are many men suffering from bereavements which hit them hard especially when they are separated from family. It’s the job of the chaplain to give ‘bad news’ about the death of a family member, and also prisoners come to the chapel to light candles to remember anniversaries. I have given out countless Living with Loss booklets and they seem to be much appreciated."

Resources for the whole church family

Sunday School groups at St Pancras Old Church and St Paul’s Camden Square have been using You Matter to explore Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son, helping children understand themes of forgiveness, belonging, and unconditional love. They have also used Meet the Cast to bring the story of Jesus’ birth to life in an engaging and accessible way.

It’s great to be able to chat to someone about faith and then give them something to take home with them. Often during the conversation, a topic we have a resource for comes up and I can very naturally give it to them. Other times, someone can choose the perfect one for them on the way out.

Graham, Ayrshire College Chaplaincy

Talking about faith in college

"I discovered Lifewords literature a few years ago and started using it in the College. We have a table that is left in the main foyer with Lifewords booklets on it and staff and students regularly pick them up to take and read. At the college's fayres we get a really good chance to interact and chat about life and faith, letting people know we are here for them.

"I find the booklets very engaging and helpful and the students will come over to us, pick them up and ask us what being a Christian is all about. This gives us the opportunity to tell them about the gospel of Jesus. I'm very confident the Lifewords resources are and will continue to be an essential part of our ministry at the College."

Kathy, Emmanuel Baptist Church

Understanding and experiencing joy

Kathy wrote a study for her community group at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Swanage based on Little Book of Joy. The group spent time reading through verses included in the Little Book of Joy, and reflected on some of the Little Books prompts, as well as some questions that Kathy wrote too.

Supporting people through times of crisis

"As a Mental Health Chaplain, I have used these resources for the past five years. Working in a psychiatric setting, I have watched patients who are at their most vulnerable find the bite sized chunks of curated scripture speak not only to them and their situation, but also at a time when finding the right words is difficult, they speak for them."

Helping families to engage with prayer

"At Messy Church we began a series on the Parables and prayer. The children made prayer boxes with contents to encourage them to pray and we gave a copy of  Little Book of Prayer to all the parents."

Revd Matt

Bringing hope in prisons

Revd Matt shared his heart for the work: "I seek to bring life in my role by facilitating people to engage with God in a way that they feel comfortable and in a way that they understand." While conversations in the chapel or on the wings can be powerful, Matt knows that often, the real moments of reflection and change can also happen in the quiet of a prison cell: "That's often when God's at work. Through Lifewords resources, they engage with God in a deeper way."
