Every year, thousands of young people and adult volunteers head off to Annual Cadet Camp – an experience made possible by a dedicated team of staff and chaplains, often known as padres.
These chaplains play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of both cadets and volunteers.
Rev Ray Khan shared how Lifewords resources made a meaningful impact at one such camp, where cadets from two counties gathered together for their annual training and activities: “Our padres handed out more than 150 camouflage-covered New Testaments,” he explained, “along with copies of Little Book of Jesus, Little Book of Prayer, Little Book of Chaos, and a commemorative St John’s Gospel marking the First World War. The response was incredible.”
Little Book of Chaos, filled with verses from the Bible that speak into the experience of mental illness, alongside quotes from young people who have struggled with depression and anxiety, resonated strongly with young people at camp. Rev Ray shared:
Cadets especially loved Little Book of Chaos, a booklet filled with scripture for life’s challenging moments. It was so popular we ran out. The high-quality design and artwork made the booklets especially appealing to the cadets.
Beyond distributing resources, the presence of padres at camp provides an important source of pastoral care. As independent listeners, they offer a safe and trusted space for cadets and volunteers who may be struggling. Whether through conversation, prayer, or simply being available, they provide spiritual and moral support when it’s needed most.
Reflecting on the experience, Rev Ray said:
Lifewords resources truly made a difference. They are not only beautifully designed, but they helped young people connect with prayer and discover that they are loved by God. Thank you for helping us bring light and hope to so many young lives.

Sometimes the smallest resources can open the door to meaningful conversations, reflection, and faith. Through the dedication of chaplains and the simple gift of scripture, light and hope are being shared with young people in moments that may stay with them for years to come.
